According to the National Council on Aging, falls are a “growing public health issue.”
It can be shocking to learn that 1 in 4 people over the age of 65 suffer a fall each year… over 14 million people per year!
Evidence-based practices such as Tai Chi and balance training classes can help support a person’s ability to maintain and regain balance in many day-to-day activities.
Class activities include:
· Using a broom stick or cane to assist in stretching
· Joint rotational exercises using light weight items
· Breathing exercises that teach how to expand and contract lungs and belly breathing
· Training the less dominant side of the body to improve ambidextrous abilities (assisting in everyday tasks such as dressing, brushing teeth, using utensils etc.)
· Eastern philosophy of moving Qi (life energy) throughout the body.
FRIDAYS, 10-10:45am: March 6, 13, 20, 27 April 10, 17, 24, May 1
CLASS LOCATION: Teen Center building- small building by the back parking lot of Lakeside Park.
Sifu Vinny (Instructor):
I’ve accumulated over 40 years of experience practicing and teaching various martial arts including Tai Qi and Qigong. In addition to the core values of breathing and mindfulness, I place a strong focus on balance training with the use of props and household items that focus on skills that will support daily living activities. Current students have remarked that our sessions are fun, interactive, and relevant. After a recent class, one student advised he will never shovel snow “the old way” again!
